Godiva is the cat of Fractal Softworks artist David Baumgart.
David is responsible for the vast majority of Starsector's art assets and in version .7a a picture of one of David'd cats, Godiva, was added to Starsector's portrait folder. For modders or other people who might go through Starsector's files it has become somewhat of an easter egg, along with the illustrations folder.
It is possible to use Godiva as your ship captain portrait (without game editing or mods) by setting your captain name to "Godiva" then entering portrait selection, where Godiva will now be available. Rumours that using this portrait increases the randomness of salvage drops are untrue; using the Godiva portrait does not yield any advantages.
In the displayed picture Godiva is resting in front of a bookshelf which has quite a decent collection of sci-fi books:
- State of the Art by Ian M Banks
- Surface Detail by Ian M Banks
- Eon by Greg Bear
- Eternity by Greg Bear
- Otherness by David Brin
- The Gunslinger by Steven King
- A Gift From Earth by Larry Niven
- Fever Dream by Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child
- Thunderhead by Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child
- The Hidden Family by Charles Stross
- Singularity Sky by Charles Stross
A September 2018 tweet by David depicts Godiva with some other books including:[1]
- Catch-22 by Joseph Heller
- Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
- A Short History of Progress by Ronald Wright
- The Secret History of Star Wars by Michael Kaminski
