Before it was outmatched by the brutal economic efficiency of the Atlas superfreighter, the Colossus heavy freighter formed the core of Domain frontier supply fleets. Thicker than strictly necessary hull plating provides protection against cosmic hazards both natural and human.

The Colossus is a sturdy and venerable hull well-suited to conditions in the post-Collapse Sector, albeit possessing primitive accomodations and limited defensive armament.

–In-Game Description

The Colossus is a ubiquitous heavy freighter, most usually encountered as a part of a faction trade convoy. It can provide ample amounts of cargo hold at a higher supply efficiency than its smaller equivalents in the early game, but its slow speed and maneuverability necessitate the use of escort ships and it has extremely limited combat potential.

Its role as a passive cargo ship makes it unsuited for combat, and should be always accompanied by lighter combat ships. Its few ballistic mounts are better suited for point defense weapons to deter enemy fighters and the Flare Launcher system to distract missiles until escorts arrive or the ship can escape combat.

Availability[]

Being so common in trade convoys of every faction, including Pirates and the Luddic Path, it's simple to acquire one in the early game by defeating one such fleet and recovering the ship.

The Colossus is often available at the open and black market of colonies of almost every faction, at a price of approximately 50 thousand credits. Hegemony worlds are a good place to start looking, and colonies of larger size are more likely to have this ship and others of such size available for purchase.

Lastly, it can be found and recovered as a derelict ship, like almost every other ship in the game.

Notes[]

The Colossus is suitable for a speed-oriented trade fleet that doesn't wish to stock up on Buffaloes or Hounds instead. Leaving the Civilian Hull mod intact, the Bulk Transport skill grants +2 burn to the Colossus. Combine that with Augmented Field Drive (+2) and the Navigation skill (+1) you can have a very respectable 12 max burn on your seemingly slow and lumbering cargo ships. Most fleets will be unable to catch you, making non-mission smuggling viable (outrun patrols rather than sneak by or rely on Shielded Cargo Holds). Overall a solid choice for early-game trading and wealth-building.

Transition to the Atlas later on when it's time to survey (slap sensors and survey packages on those bad boys to take advantage of their capital ship bonus to both), or when you start acquiring powerful combat vessels with a lower max burn potential.

Due to the extensive modification applied to the underlying frame of the ship the Colossus Mk.II and Mk.III are considered separate hulls, in a similar manner to the Atlas and Prometheus modifications, despite being Pirate and Luddic Path modified versions of the basic Colossus.
