The go-to choice for medium cargo hauling in the Sector, the Buffalo-class freighter exemplifies the "Load-n-Pray" principle prevalent in Sector shipping.

Sporting just a single small weapon emplacement, the hull of the ship is no more than a large engine with a tiny crew quarters section and cargo grapplers. A captain taking this ship out without a convoy rarely gets to make the same mistake twice. Incapable of anything resembling a combat maneuver, the lateral thrusters on Buffalo-class ships are designed to merely enable it to dock when (and if) it reaches its destination.

The ship engines are the greatest contributor to hull cost, which, while low, is still within the norms for a medium freighter. The greatest contributing factor to its ubiquity is the fact that the blueprint for this ship is usually hardcoded into every orbital shipyard's blueprint database.

This ship has been given Luddic Church markings. Systems modifications are otherwise superficial.

This ship has been heavily modified - and poorly maintained - by its pirate crew.

This ship is on the Hegemony auxiliary list and as such its systems have been upgraded to military standard and a rigorous schedule of servicing enforced with the expectation that it can be pressed into military service during emergencies.

Ships that would be decommissioned in quieter times now see widespread use throughout the Sector. The hull designation for such ships is usually tagged with a "D", for "damaged" or "defective".

Notes[]

The Buffalo is a ubiquitous logistics feature of many fleets wanting destroyer-sized hauling capacity, with its ample cargo hold for its maintenance cost and decent burn speed. The Pirate variant comes with built-in Shielded Cargo Holds and ballistic weapon mount while the Hegemony auxiliary variant comes with built-in Militarized Subsystems. In all variants the Buffalo is slow and fragile and will probably not make it out of combat alive if the fleet is caught.

Change History[]

0.95a

  • Buffalo (TT): now has high-tech engine glows
  • Increased cargo capacity to 400 (was: 300)

0.9

  • Reduced max burn to 8 (was 9) to bring in line with standard civilian burn levels at that size
